The Coral Reefs of Bermuda

The coral reefs of Bermuda are one of the best snorkeling sites in the world! Why? Quite simply protection. Bermuda has long established laws that have created North and South shore coral reef preserves.

Although it is not noticeable the Isles of Bermuda are formed by a huge underwater volcano that rises up over 15000 feet from the ocean floor. The southern edge of the volcano pokes above the ocean’s waves and forms the land mass of Bermuda. On the Southern side the reef is less than a quarter mile away from the shore line but on the north side it extends up to 12 miles away from the shore and forms an impenetrable barrier around the island. There are several breaks in the reef or “cuts” “Eastern Blue Cut” is one of the larger ones. The flow of food and nutrients through this area make it one of the most spectacular snorkeling sites in the world.

Eastern Blue Cut is protected from ALL fishing! This means that the fish are super plentiful, much bigger and less cautious than at almost any other snorkeling site in Bermuda.
